Holy Trinity Seminary celebrates Patronal Feast of the Three Hierarchs
On February 12, 2011, Holy Trinity Seminary celebrated its patronal feast, commemorating the Three Holy Hierarchs Basil the Great, Gregory the Theologian, and John Chrysostom. Although named in honor of the Holy Trinity, the seminary is under the protection of these three great Hierarchs of the Eastern Church, noted for their great piety and wisdom. Next to the day of Pentecost, the feast of the Three Hierarchs is one of the most important feast days for the seminary.
The celebration of the feast began the previous night, February 11, with the All-Night Vigil, His Grace Bishop Jerome of Manhattan served with the brotherhood clergy. In remembrance of the Byzantine heritage of the Three Holy Hierarchs, portions of the service were in Greek and sung in Byzantine chant, under the direction of Hieromonk Cyprian (Alexandrou), a teacher of New Testament Greek at the seminary.
His Grace Bishop Jerome also served the Divine Liturgy the following morning. During the reading of the Sixth Hour, fifth-year seminarian Ephraim Willmarth was tonsured a reader by Bishop Jerome. The liturgy was followed by a festive meal in the brotherhood trapeza. At the end of liturgy, Bishop Jerome gave a homily encouraging the remembrance of teachers both past and present. He called to mind his previous teachers of blessed memory: Archbishop Averky (Taushev), Bishop Nikon.
After the meal, there was a ceremony in the Seminary Hall, with tea, coffee, and sweets prepared by the fourth-year seminarians. His Grace Bishop Jerome gave an address in Russian about the legacy of Metropolitan Anthony Khrapovitsky of Kiev, the founding First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad. Archpriest Vladimir von Tsurikov, the Dean of Holy Trinity Seminary, then announced the students chosen to receive academic grants. From the first year: Jason Laiblin, John Martin, and David Mahand; and 2nd year seminarian Roman Kunen. From the third year: Vladimir Gayfudinov, Sergei Grushchin, and Anthony Williams. From the fourth year: Dimitrii Anopochkin and Sergei Tuigin. From the fifth year: Maksim Abroskin, Dimitrii Bolbot, and Ephraim Willmarth.
