Quartet goes to Boston
On Saturday, March 28, the Holy Trinity Seminary Quartet traveled to Holy Epiphany Russian Orthodox Church in Roslindale, Massachusetts to sing the services of the fourth Sunday of Great Lent. They were warmly received by the rector of the parish, Priest Victor Boldewskul in his home. After a brief supper, the quartet went to the church and sang Vespers and Matins. The service was well attended, and the church was nearly full. Fr. Victor thanked the singers from the ambo, including Michael Perekrestov (conducting), Vladimir Davydov, Nicholas Lochmatow, and Ephraim Willmarth. The quartet became a quintet when they were joined by Alexander Kallaur, who doubled the bass part. Much of the reading was done by Peter Markevich. Protodeacon Alexander Jarostchuk gave the seminarians hospitality after the service at his own home.
On Sunday, March 29, after a brief rehearsal, the seminarians sang the Liturgy dedicated to St. John of the Ladder. The singers sang a combination of four-part harmony and znameny plain chants in unison.
After the Liturgy, Fr. Victor addressed the quartet, and made a special collection for Holy Trinity Seminary, reminding the parishioners that it is the only theological school in the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia where a student can receive a bachelor’s degree in theology and prepare for priestly service in the church. He mentioned the seminary’s unique feature of the intertwined life between the Seminary and Monastery. He fondly recalled his own days at Holy Trinity Seminary as the best years of his life, and reminded the parishioners that theological education is essential to continue the life of the Church. Fr. Victor reflected that just as he replaced Fr. Roman of blessed memory, the former rector of Holy Epiphany Church, he will need to be replaced eventually as well. Fr. Victor commented on the current situation in the seminary, and that he is very pleased to have a connection between Holy Epiphany parish and Holy Trinity Seminary.
After the service, the former parishioner of Holy Epiphany and current seminarian Nicholas Lochmatow delivered a PowerPoint presentation on the history and life of Holy Trinity Seminary and Monastery, showing photographs of the notable and unknown people from the recent and distant past of Holy Trinity Seminary and Monastery.
On behalf of Holy Trinity Seminary, the members of the quartet would like to express their sincere gratitude to Fr. Victor, Fr. Alexander, the clergy, servers, sisterhood, and parishioners of Holy Epiphany Church for their prayers, hospitality, and generous support.
