Russian Biologist Gives Presentation
3/24/2002As part of an ongoing lecture series at Holy Trinity Seminary, the seminarians had the opportunity to witness a slide presentation on the problems facing the Russian zapovedniki system in the Altai region in Russia. Aside from students, the lecture attracted many visitors - Bishop Michael was present as well as many monks and other members of the Holy Trinity Community.
Vyacheslav Trigubovich, a biologist and a central player in the effort to preserve this land, is the director of the Siberian Interregional Center "Zapovedniki". It's mission is to support the zapodevniks system in Russia, which has involved a close collaboration with the federal government structure that manages this system. This 28 year old wildlife biologist has been involved since his university days with the Russian wilderness preserve system as a tracker, a researcher inventorying the ecosystems, and an anti-poaching warden.
Trigubovich's presentation evoked a lively discussion and also gave him opportunity to talk about the ongoing project of SICZ - declaring another region a zapovednik for the long-term protection of snow leopard habitats in Siberia.
The lecture concluded at 10 pm with a prayer.
